The Men's Basketball sports team at the University of Salford was founded in 2018 and since then played various competitive and friendly games across the nation with a multicultural team, and people of various abilities.

When the chairman of the basketball team approached us, we were elated! We saw the potential of this student group — and decided to help their brand reach a social media level worthy of the big leagues.

Let's take a look at where we started ...

Based on some conversations with the chairman of the team, we've identified several concerns:

  • Basketball wasn’t taken seriously at university before

  • Not many students knew there was a basketball team

  • Reputation of the team was poor

  • Organization of the team was poor

  • There weren’t many followers or engagement on social media

  • Fans weren’t engaged, or directly involved

Because of our curation of a solid social media presence through regular posts on Instagram, high-quality photography, and graphic design, the basketball team is beginning to be taken seriously at the university.

We've established a Media & Relations team to continue delivering regular high-quality content as we expand and grow channels and frequency of posts. This helps players focus on winning games, while we capture and share celebrations across the UK.

Our efforts during Welcome Week have helped raise awareness of the team at the university.

  • Printed and distributed 180 posters and flyers in a grassroots campaign across the university campus

  • Displayed posters around campus and accommodation areas

  • 82 people signed up for the trials and the turnout was great

We’re definitely turning people's heads at university!

  • Tactics such as grassroots or guerrilla marketing, although budget-friendly, are a super-boost to letting students know about our basketball team

  • Encouraging the players to take part in local and community events, and sharing their stories on our social media channels — gets the team seen at the university and improve its reputation

  • Take advantage of Discord for better organization of huge teams such as an events calendar to keep track of upcoming socials, games and more

  • Getting our players known by fans outside of the sport through ShockRadio documentary collaboration; podcasting; and, posting lifestyle content on social media “get to know us”-type clips.

First Game of The Season

We have made countless friends at the University of Salford, who are super helpful, helping us reach the right people at the right time.

We've designed and animated a digital billboard at MediaCityUK to advertise the game to students, bringing audiences and their anticipation for the sport!

The University of Salford won. And, so, did we.
